The NSU-Spare parts list, NSU-Workshop manual and the Driver's handbook.Original or reprint. Originals are expensive and it is not good to browse them with oily fingers in the workshop. So use a reprint or copy in the workshop and have the original issue at home in your bookshelf.
Copies or reprints are available from some special motorbook traders. Lots of reprinted
manuals are available from the WK publishers at Bad Salzuflen, Germany. Have a look at

NSU-MAX richtig angefaßt
by Ernst Leverkus. Reprint of the 1959 issue. Motorbuch Verlag Stuttgart, ISBN 3-613-01109-3.This book is highly recommended to every MAX driver. The chapter about the deismantling and reassembling of the engine is much better than the original NSU workshop manual, because it is written for MAX drivers and not for trained craftsmen. The other chapters are nice to read and tell you a lot of the lifestyle in the late 50s in Germany. Little sample:
Manchmal kann man Motorradfahrer beobachten, die einen besonderen Spaß daran finden, an Stellen Vollgas aufzuziehen, wo wir nicht im Leben daran denken würden. Zum Beispiel vor dem Kino oder vor der Eisdiele, in der gerade die Lisa und ihre Freundin Monika ein Eis zu 20 lutschen und über den aufreizenden Ton der MAX erschauern sollen...
